This is the same debate surrounding the RIAA and music downloads, albeit with a bit of a twist: artists are far less affected by illegal downloads than authors, who (usually) can't go on lucrative tours or license their content for commercials. The problem seems to lie in how bloated publishing firms promote and package textbook content.

Government accountability office explains why your textbooks cost went up 240% since 1986 while inflation only went up 72%. Apparently because of enhanced offering. Obviously students are paying for those music downloads after all, since the Math taught in college hasn't really changed since 1986.
